Community Involvement

Our Focus
There are two primary areas on which we concentrate:

Health and Welfare

Highwoods supports programs which improve the health and well being of people in the communities where we operate.

Community Development

Highwoods supports organizations dedicated to job creation, business growth, and community development in cities where we operate.

Charitable Giving and Real Estate Investment Trusts (“REITs”)
Unlike most corporations, REITs do not pay corporate income taxes and therefore do not enjoy a tax benefit from charitable giving. Charitable contributions are considered an expense in the REIT world. In spite of this, Highwoods is committed to supporting and participating in worthy charitable and community activities.

To Whom We Contribute
Highwoods contributes to federally recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organizations located in communities where we do business, through the local Highwoods’ division office. Highwoods recognizes there are vast numbers of worthy causes and organizations. Each year we will concentrate on a select few that are consistent with our philosophy and requirements.

What We Contribute
Highwoods contributes cash, in-kind donations and the volunteer efforts of our employees.

Requesting a Donation
To request a donation, a qualifying organization must submit a Highwoods Donation Request Form (PDF) with the following information and documentation:

	Name, address, and telephone number of the organization;
	Contact name and title;
	Background information, including history and mission of the organization;
	Copy of IRS exemption letter verifying 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status;
	If requested donation amount is over $10,000, latest audited financial reports; and
	List of names and professional affiliations of directors and trustees.

Requests should include the following information regarding the program for which funding is being requested:

	Purpose and objectives of the program;
	Plan of action and time frame;
	Total program funding required and projected resources;
	Dollar amount requested, in-kind donation requested, and/or employee volunteers requested;
	How the program’s success will be determined; and
	How Highwoods’ support will be recognized.

Qualifying Organizations
Highwoods contributes to federally recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organizations located in communities where we do business, primarily through the local Highwoods’ division office. Our division offices are located in:

	Atlanta
	Kansas City
	Memphis
	Nashville
	Orlando
	Pittsburgh
	Raleigh/Durham
	Richmond
	Tampa
	Triad (Winston-Salem & Greensboro)

Non-Qualifying Organizations
While there are many worthy charitable organizations, we must continually focus and leverage our available dollars to make the most positive impact in our community. As a result, Highwoods generally does not fund:

	Organizations that do not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status;
	Organizations whose mission does not involve health and welfare or community development issues;
	Individuals, religious organizations, political candidates, government groups or lobbying organizations;
	Labor and fraternal organizations;
	Anti-business groups;
	Creation or maintenance of monuments or memorials;
	Travel expenses for groups or individuals;
	Advertising in program booklets;
	Annual operating support; and
	Capital campaigns and endowments.

Additional Provisions
Donation requests must be submitted in writing. Telephone solicitations will not be considered. Programs funded in any one year are not automatically assured of future funding. Requests are accepted throughout the fiscal year and applications are reviewed quarterly. Replies to donation requests are provided on a quarterly basis.

Submitting a Request
Donation requests should be submitted directly to the appropriate local division office. For a complete list of offices, please refer to the Highwoods Donation Request Form (PDF). Please send all requests to the attention of the Highwoods Community Relations Committee.
